American Bittern
The American Bittern is a wading bird in the heron family. Most active at dusk they feeds on amphibians, fish, insects and small reptiles. These birds prefer their own company and remain well hidden in bogs, marshes and wetlands. They nest in isolated areas where the female will build the nest and the male is responsible for guarding it. 2-3 eggs are laid at one time with an incubation period of one month. The chicks will remain in the nest for the next 6-7weeks. When under threat the American Bittern will stand motionless with their bill in the air in an attempt to blend into its surroundings.
