American Coot |
|
The American Coot is often mistaken for a duck as they swim in a similar fashion. However, there is one discernible difference - the American coot does not have webbed feet like a duck, rather scalloped toes. This common water bird has a black body and a white chicken-like beak often with a red/brown dot on the ridge. Chicks have a bright red head with soft orange down around their necks. The American Coot lives and breeds around wetlands and open water bodies, although they conceal their nest well in tall reeds. During breeding season they become highly territorial of the area where they obtain their food. They eat plants life arthropods, fish and aquatic animals.
