American Golden-Plover
The American Golden-Plover has a long circular migration route. Breeding in the arctic tundra adults will leave this area in early summer (younger birds will linger until late summer), flying offshore from the east coast of North American down to South America. They spend winter grazing in grasslands. On return in spring they pass mainly through the middle of North America to reach their arctic breeding grounds. Having a particular preference for low vegetation rocky slopes this bird nests on the ground with soft lichen and dried grass and leaves. These birds feed on invertebrates, fruits, leaves and seeds, catching their prey with a pecking motion.
