American Goldfinch |
|
The American Goldfinch loves to live in overgrown areas, especially if sunflowers, aster and thistle plants are easily available. Feeding almost exclusively on seeds these small birds can be found in fields, parks, floodplains, even the suburbs. These clever little birds make a nest from rootlets and plant fibers woven together so tightly it can hold water! The female lashes the base of the foundations of the nest to the branches with spider silk and lines the nest with down and seeds. The Goldfinch prefers more open areas to nest and has a preference for higher branches in the trees. They lay between 2 and 7 eggs per clutch.
