American Wigeon |
|
The American Wigeon has the highest proportion of plant matter in its diet then that of any other duck. It is will also eat some insects and mollusks during breeding season. It feeds on or just below the water surface, it does this by tipping upside down and ducking its head under the water to reach the plants below. The American Wigeon nests in shallow freshwater wetlands; places such as ponds, marshes and rivers. The nest is found in tall grass or below shrubs, often far from the water. The American Wigeon was once known as the "˜Baldpate' due to its white stripe resembling a bald man's head.
