Anhinga |
|
Quite unusually the Anhinga does not have waterproof feathers like most waterbirds. This can mean its feathers can become waterlogged and make the bird barely buoyant. This, however, makes it quite easy for the Anhinga to dive under the water to search for underwater prey such as fish and other amphibians. This bird of the southern swamps has also been called the Snake-Bird for its habit of swimming with only its long neck sticking out of the water giving the appearance of a snake. Male and female look alike, although the females upper body and head is lighter in color.
