Arctic Tern
The Arctic Tern breeds in open tundra, boreal forest or on rocky islands and beaches. During winter it spends time on the edge of pack ice and molts its feathers. The Arctic Tern molts its feathers so quickly that the bird is nearly flightless for this time. It feeds on small fish, crustaceans and insects. Its nest is an indent in the ground or an area of vegetation piled on the ground. It prefers its nest on the ground in the open. Arctic Terns have been known to live as long as 34 years, although does not begin to breed until its third or fourth year.
