Bank Swallow |
|
The Bank Swallow are social birds living in colonies. The colonies may range from 10 nests to nearly 2,000 depending on the available space. These nests are made of grass, straw, rootlets, stalks or leaves. These flat long nests are placed at the end of a burrow in sand or gravel approximately 3 to 4 feet deep in the ground. They nest near lakes and ponds and feed on flying insects, mainly gnats, and other insects whose early stages of life are aquatic. The male Bank swallow often pursues females other then its mate within their colony and attempts to mate with them.
