Xantus's Murrelet breeds on offshore islands of Baja California and southern California. This bird feeds far out at sea, often in association with large predatory fish like tuna, on larval fish like anchovies and sardines. At sea they are often seen in pairs. This species was named for its discoverer, the Hungarian explorer John Xantus, who was a pioneer ornithologist on the West Coast in the 1860s.
