This is the largest member of the loon family, at 30-40 inches in length, an average weight of 11.6 lbs and a wingspan of 53-63 inches. It is a fish-eater, catching its prey underwater. Their calls include yodels, wails, and tremolos, similar to those of the Common Loon, but slower and lower in pitch. This is an Arctic species that almost always breeds north of the tree line in both Eurasia and North America. Outside of the Americas, it is found regularly in Norway, Finland, Siberia, Japan, and Great Britain.
