This bird is found mainly in Brazil from Bahia and Minas Gerais southwards as well as in Paraguay and northern Argentina. It drums on tall trees and flies from tree to tree singing "benedito." Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and heavily degraded former forest. Its forehead and throat are bright yellow while, in the male, the crown and nape are red.
