A medium sized bird, about 8 inches long, the adults of this species have a sharply pointed bill. Their breeding habitat is cattail marshes in North America, mainly west of the Great Lakes. These birds migrate in the winter to the southwestern United States and Mexico. They are found in marshy habitats in the summer, and frequent open habitats at other times of year. Their diet consists of seeds and insects. They sometimes catch insects in flight.
