Protect Yourself From AIDS, Says Emeagwali

World AIDS Day Pan-African television broadcast featuring Angelique Kidjo, Philip Emeagwali and Desmond Tutu, December 1, 2006. World AIDS DAY interview of Philip Emeagwali on November 14, 2006. Excerpts and quotes from the entire 30-minute interview: The fight against AIDS, is the mother of all wars. We think it wouldnt be us, that only others get AIDS. Its not who you are that gets you infected with HIV. Its unprotected sex that gets you infected. Protect yourself. Its safe sex or no sex. Its thirty-minutes of pleasure and a lifetime of pain. Every minute of every day a child dies from AIDS. Making us witness to a decimation that is beyond the imagination of the most imaginative horror writer. The HIV virus can infect or affect you. Each and every one of us must take action and get tested to stop the spread of AIDS. The world is watching the AIDS crisis in Africa. The HIV virus is claiming more lives than wars; is a disease of mass destruction; More Africans are dying from AIDS than from wars. Stopping the spread of AIDS is everyones challenge. The fight against AIDS,is the mother of all wars. Knowledge is our only defense. We must raise awareness. Protect ourselves. Protect our partners. And get tested, if we are worried. We think it wouldnt be us, that only others get AIDS. Its not who you are that gets you infected with HIV. Its unprotected sex that gets you infected. Protect yourself. Its safe sex or no sex. Its thirty-minutes of pleasure and a lifetime of pain. Prevention today means protection tomorrow. Millions of children are missing their teachers, caring for their dying mothers and fathers. Learning that you are HIV-positive is tough news. But when the going gets tough, the tough gets going. The limitations in your life are the ones you imposed upon ourself. You have to make things happen, not just watch things happen. Protect your partner and seek treatment. Every minute of every day a child dies from AIDS. Making us witness to a decimation that is beyond the imagination of the most imaginative horror writer. The HIV virus can infect or affect you. Each and every one of us must take action and get tested to stop the spread of AIDS. The HIV positive is a world citizen. The HIV virus does not recognize the sovereignty of people or that of nations. Territorial boundaries are odd inventions of the human mind. The birds and animals, thank goodness, do not recognize our boundaries. The earth is one country.
